100,000 Rual Homes Need to be Built
The National Housing Federation has said that thousands of new homes need to be built for younger families in order to support local community life. More pensioner friendly homes need to be built where there is a clear need.
The National Housing Federation has predicated that the amount of 65 and overs living in rural areas will have increased by 39% by 2020.
The amount of people currently on waiting lists for affordable homes in rural England has increased to 750,000. However due to a massive shortage of new homes being built, many families with low incomes are in poor quality housing and are unable to move to more suitable accommodation.
The National Housing Federation estimates that approximately 100,000 affordable homes will need to be built in rural England in order to meet the demands over the next ten years.
David Orr, Chief Executive for The National Housing Federation comments: ”The proportion of older people living in the countryside will rise dramatically over the next decade – bringing many benefits to rural communities but also a series of big challenges. As the older rural population booms, we must ensure that enough affordable homes are built for younger people on modest wages, so that they can continue to work in and support key services like shops, public transport, and care and support services.”
