Increase in single first time buyers

According to the latest research published by Santander the number of first time buyers who are single has, for the first time ever outweighed the number of first time buyers who are married.

In the 1990’s 46% of first time buyers were married while 32% were single. This balance has now shifted with research showing that 37% of first time buyers are single while only 29% of are married.

According to Sandtander, this change in behaviour can be attributed to the change of attitudes from society regarding marriage, co-habiting and career ambitions. With more people, generally woman concentrating on their careers and putting marriage off until later on in their life.

Andy Smith, Santander commented, “Society has changed a great deal over the past couple of decades, and in many ways it’s pleasing to see that married couples still account for nearly a third of first-time buyers. With the new Government saying it will put a focus on marriage, perhaps we will see an increase in first-time buyers waiting until they are married to get on the housing ladder. House prices are increasing, but there is still plenty of availability for young people with income to buy a home, especially at the one or two-bed end of the market.”
